Case Study 5:1 and 2

CHAPTER FIVE

CLOSING CASE STUDY ONE
WHEN YOU’RE BIG, YOU CAN BE YOUR OWN B2B E-MARKETPLACE

1. Volkswagen operates its own proprietary B2B e-marketplace in which its suppliers participate. What are the disadvantages to Volkswagen of not using a generic B2B e-marketplace with even more suppliers? What are the advantages to Volkswagen of developing and using its own proprietary B2B e-marketplace?

2. When Volkswagen needs a new part design, it uses VWsupplygroup.com to get its suppliers involved in the design process early. This creates a tremendous amount of interorganizational collaboration. What are the advantages to the suppliers and to Volkswagen in doing so?

3. How is Volkswagen’s VWgroupsupply.com B2B e-marketplace an example of a vertical e-marketplace implementation? How is it an example of a horizontal e-marketplace implementation? Why is it necessary that Volkswagen combine both of these e-marketplaces into one e-marketplace? What would be the drawbacks to creating two different e-marketplaces—one for suppliers of direct materials and one for suppliers of MRO materials?

4. To make effective purchasing decisions, Volkswagen’s purchasing agents need business intelligence. What kind of business intelligence does iPAD provide to purchasing agents for carrying out their tasks? What additional kinds of business intelligence not discussed in this case could Volkswagen’s purchasing agents take advantage of to make more effective decisions?

5. IPAD manages the workflow for purchasing agents. Describe how iPAD manages this process including information provided, steps to be executed, and the presentation of information.

CLOSING CASE STUDY TWO

E-BUSINESS TREND: FAR-EAST E-COMMERCE EXPLOSION

1. According to Porter’s Five Forces Model (from Chapter 1), how would you characterize the competitive space in which Cyworld and Myspace operate according to buyer power, supplier power, threat of substitute products or services , threat of new entrants, and rivalry among existing competitors? Pick one of Porter’s Five Forces and describe what Cyworld has undertaken to shift that force in positive way in its direction.

2. In our discussion of customers and their perceptions of value, we noted that customers tend to categorize products and services as either convenience or specialty. How would you characterize the products and services on Consumer to Consumer e-commerce auction sites such as Taobao and eBay- convenience, specialty, or perhaps a combination of the two? Justify your answer.

3. What sort of payment options does eBay provide? You may have visit to eBay’s site to learn this information. If Taobao were to enter the U.S market, would it have to offer similar payments options? That is, are these payment options entry barriers? Is there room for innovation in the payments space? If so (and the answer is yes), describe it.

4. Privacy is overriding concern today on the internet. At sites like Cyworld and Myspace, some people often divulge too much information such as full name, an address, and even a phone number. From an ethical point of view, do you believe that social networking sites have an obligation to protect users from cyber stalkers? If you believe that the answer is no, justify your answer. If you believe the answer is yes, describe the steps can be undertaken to protect users.

5. One key to consumer retention is creating a “sticky” Web site. Review the virtual environments for both Cyworld and Myspace. Which do you think is more “sticky” and better retains comsumers? What is your definition of “sticky”?

Case Study 6: 1and 2

CHAPTER SIX
CLOSING CASE STUDY ONE

GETTING ON THE RIGHT TRACK AT GENERAL MOTORS

1. In implementing the new inventory management system and converting existing users (dealership) to it, what sort of implementation method is GM using? In your opinion, why is this the most appropriate method? If you had to choose a different implementation method, what would it be and why?

2. Why do you believe that General Motors has allowed its 7,000 North American dealerships to choose different dealership management systems? What are the advantages to allowing this freedom of choice? What are the disadvantages to such an approach?

3. The new inventory management system provides a satisfactory repair experience 96 percent of the time, up from 67 percent. While that increase is both strong and good, is 96 percent really that good? Why or why not? What quantitative approach would you use to justify system enhancements to improve the 96 percent to 98 percent? To 100 percent?

4. If you refer back to Chapter 4 and decision support systems, how would you characterize the decision-making process of determining how many parts to keep on hand? Is that mainly a recurring decision or a nonrecurring decision? Is that mainly a structured decision or a nonstructured decision? For both the latter questions, justify your answers.

5. The new inventory management system reduces the overall costs of parts inventory and, at the same time, increases customer satisfaction. How is this an example of abottom-line initiative? How is this an example of top-line initiative? If necessary, refer back to Chapter 1.
CHAPTER SIX

CLOSING CASE STUDY TWO

SHOULD AN ORGANIZATION OUTSOURCE SECURITY?

1. If you were developing a new system using the traditional systems development life cycle (SDLC), at what point would you need to identify that you needed to outsource some aspect of IT security?

2. In reference to the first question, how would you continue with the in-house system development effort and, at the same time, carry on the process of the outsourcing IT security with another company?

3. Boiling Springs Savings Bank did a background check on Perimeter before hiring it. Search the Web for sources that can help an organization do background checks on IT security firms? What did you find? Did you find a couple of Websites or certification organizations that offer some guarantee of IT security firms? If so, whom do you find?

4. Turning over IT security to an outside organization is tantamount to giving another organization complete access to all your systems and information. What stipulations would you include in a service level agreement with an IT security outsourcer to ensure that it didn’t exploit the openness of your systems and steal strategic and sensitive information?

5. Do some research on the Web for companies that specialize in IT security outsourcing besides Perimeter and Symantec. Whom did you find? Do you seem to be reputable? Do they include a list of clients you can contact for references?

CLOSING CASE STUDY ONE
INTERNATIONAL TRUCK MAKES A HUGE BET ON A SERVICE-ORIENTED ARCHITECURE

1. With respect to its customers (dealers in this case), how is international Truck using a service-oriented architecture to meet their needs? How does using an SoA further help International Truck erect an entry barrier (from Chapter 1)?

2. With respect to information needs, what advantages and efficiencies is international Truck hoping to gain by using a service-oriented architecture? Why are these advantages and efficiencies not possible with its current legacy systems?

3. Recalling our discussion of software development methodologies in Chapter 6 that focus on component-based development (i.e., RAD, XP, and agile), how is international Truck able to integrate new software modules with existing ones?

4. What key infrastructure-centric metrics could International Truck use to justify its movement toward a service-oriented architecture? For each that you identify, provide a short description of why the metric is important.

5. How important is it for International Truck to have a good business continuity plan is place? What key IT systems and other IT resources do you believe would be at the top of the list for quick recovery? Why?

CHAPTER SEVEN

CLOSING CASE STUDY TWO
ROGER WILLIAMS MEDICAL CENTER BOOSTS ITS IT INFRASTRACTURE

1. In this chapter, we noted that many effectiveness metrics depend on the application under security, such as supply chain management and customer relationship management. What sort of effectiveness metrics would the health care industry likely use to evaluate the success of IT systems? Where possible, highlight the use of these effectiveness metrics by roger Williams.

2. In the final part of this case study, Roger Williams was making plans to create a business continuity plan for its information. Why do you think the hospital had not already developed such plan in the event of a disaster? How is HP’s new IT infrastructure going to help Roger Williams build a robust business continuity plan?
3. According to the network infrastructures we discussed in this chapter, how would you characterize Roger Williams’ new IT infrastructure? Justify your answer.

4. As a part of a business continuity plan. Many businesses identify cold sites or hot sites to which they can move carry on their business activities. What about a hospital like Roger Williams? What if it suffered a disaster such as a flood or hurricane? Where could it move to provide quality patient care?

5. What infrastructure-centric metrics can you find in this case study? Why are they so important to Roger Williams? What other infrastructure-centric metrics might be important to the hospital?

Closing case study 2 chapter 8

1. If you were the manager of a company where it was discovered that credit card information had been stolen, what responsibility would you have to the people whose personal information was compromised? What are the pros and cons of notifying and of not notifying possible victims?
2. E*Trade, a leader in online brokerage services, is the first company to go to a two-factor authentication system optionally available to its customers with accounts of $50,000 or more. The first factor is the ID and password that customers have always needed, and second, they use a security token or, as E*Trade calls it, a Digital Security ID. This is a little device that you can carry on your key chain that displays a new random six-digit number every minute. E*Trade's host system must, of course, synchronize with the device. When you log in, you have to type in this number after your ID and password. Since the number changes so often's it's virtually impossible to hack an account with this two-pronged protection. From a consumer's point of view, do you think this is a good idea? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the system to businesses and customers? With which online transactions would you consider it worthwhile to enforce this level of security? Remember that you might have a lot of these tokens if you use a lot of online services.
3. In this case study you saw how personal information can be stolen from huge databases and data warehouses. What other ways are there that thieves can obtain personal information about you that would allow them to steal your identity and run up debts in your name? To what extent would you be liable for these debts? What would you have to do (What steps would you take) to reestablish your financial identity if you discovered your identity had been stolen?
4. In the case of the Bank of America, the data was being shipped on tapes to a safe location. This is very good backup policy to make sure that in the event of a major disaster like a fire or flood, data can be quickly restored enabling the company to be back in operation as soon as possible. However, this procedure leaves the company vulnerable to old-fashioned theft of the physical tapes containing personal information. What are two ways that this information that travels on trucks and planes could be protected?

Closing case study 1 chapter 8

1.If you were to give advice to someone who had just started using e-mail,or even someone who's been using e-mail for a while, what would you tell that person should be the one guiding principle in all their e-mail communications? Put your advice into a sentence.
2.Now expand on your one guiding principle in question 1, and offer 10 rules for writing e-mails.What should does 10 rules be?
3.Imagine you're a manager in a lawn care business and you have an office staff of five people.Your lawyer suggests that you issue guidelines or rules to your staff about storing e-mail on the company's server and on the computers they use in their work for you.what should those guidelines be? What would the rules be? Be sure to explain your rationale.
4. Do you think there should be a federal guidelines governing a business's e-mail traffic just as there are regarding a business's financial records? If so, what should they be? If not, why not?

The Diamond Plate kegerator Cabinet

diamond-kegerator

This is one of those man cave gadgets that makes most men drool upon first sight of it. I’m not sure what draws the eyes first, that shiny diamond plating or the nice flat screen TV. It’d blend in within any garage alongside all of the rest of your toolboxes. Then to top things off this cabinet has an added bonus, not only do you get to hide out and watch the game, but you get cold beer thanks to the built-in kegerator.

Bark Buster

bark-busterDon’t own a breed that is pretty much quiet all the time? The Bark Buster ought to do the trick when it comes to keeping your four-legged friend quiet - this sonic device will emit a high-pitched pulse inaudible to humans that will irritate the fur out of your dog, although it is harmless in a way. This will kick in the Pavlovian behavior of remaining quiet at all times, barking only when the situation calls for it (such as when a stranger with ill-intention comes your way). Effective within a 20 foot radius, the Bark Buster comes with two sensitivity levels - and can be used indoors as well as outdoors. You can pick up the Bark Buster for $14.99.

Wiimote turned into MP3 player

wiipod

The Wiimote is one versatile piece of plastic, as an enterprising brain decided to pick its innards and replace it with the presence of an iPod Shuffle inside. Heck, even the case has been modified a bit to accommodate a pair of headphones, with the Shuffle residing comfortably within the confines of where the AA batteries are supposed to be. Definitely adding a whole lot more bulk to what was once an extremely portable MP3 player, this Wiimote hack will surely attract attention wherever you go.

Japan gets e-book reader from Adtec

adtec-reader

There has been a fair number of e-book readers available in the market to date, and this time round we have Adtec Corp. from the Land of the Rising Sun that will release their latest electronic book reader at the end of next month in the land of its birth. This model will be built based on the “eSlick”, and just in case that comes across as rather familiar, the eSlick is currently being sold Stateside by Foxit Software Co., although Adtec’s version will (obviously) support the Japanese language. For those living in Japan, the Adtec e-book reader will be exclusively available from Adtec under the Foxit brand.

Talking Teaching Alarm Clock

talking-clockNice to see gadgets being used to delegate teaching our kids stuff, including telling the time. Guess robot nannys aren’t really too far-fetched to consider, eh? Hammacher’s Talking Teaching Alarm Clock is another device that picked up the Product of the Year Award from Creative Child Magazine, where it will whip your little ones into shape verbally where telling the current time is concerned.

The clock displays a random analog time on a high-contrast LCD and asks, “What time is it?” in a clear female voice. Children can check their answers by pressing a button that prompts the clock to speak the correct time and display the digital equivalent. The clock is preprogrammed with five levels of difficulty, beginning with only round hours (three o’clock) and progressing to more difficult-to-learn times. Times can also be entered manually, allowing you to customize lessons. You can set the clock face to turn green at a specific time in the morning, signaling to a child that it is okay to get out of bed. The clock has a working alarm, 10-minute snooze function, and a night-light.

You can opt for it to be powered by either AC or a couple of AAA batteries. It retails for $49.95 a pop, and is a great way to introduce your kids to the wonderful world of the snooze alarm concept - something they might regret in the future as they snooze past their working time.

Duracell soon to release myGrid SmartPower

duracellchargepad

There is nothing I dislike more than dealing with charging my cellphone. Especially since it seems like I do it way too often. I’ve even gone as far as taking out a staple gun and attaching the cord to the back of a shelf so that the top sticks out and the cord never unhooks from my phone and falls down. That does make it easier, but something like this myGrid from Duracell would be far more simple. When it comes to charging, simple is definitely a good thing.

Plantronics out Discovery 975 Bluetooth headset

discovery975

Bluetooth headsets - either you love them or loathe them. I feel indifferent about the matter though, but have always hankered to own one despite rarely finding myself in a situation where I have the need for it. Plantronics is an old hand where Bluetooth headsets are concerned, and their latest release would be the Plantronics Discovery 975 Bluetooth earpiece. This model will take over where the Discovery 925 left off. Not to say that the Discovery 925 is a douchebag, as the 975’s predecessor did boast superior audio quality and an innovative lightweight design that is evident in the genes of the latest Discovery 975. Users of this new headset can look forward to an improved audio experience that boasts advanced AudioIQ2 and WindSmart technologies which are capable of delivering natural sounding voice in harsh noise environments.

The launch of Zune HD is just around the corner but not yet close enough, it looks like though someone’s got their hands on one already.

According to CrazyphoneGuy of Twitter and his prodigious Twitpic account, the picture above is of the Zune HD’s new box. It looks quite a bit like existing Zune boxes, but that’s certainly no slight.

As we all know, Hunan TV of China already started the filming of their version of the hit Japanese manga 'Hana Yori Dango (Boys are Greater Than Girls)'. This will be the 4th drama series version after Taiwan, Japan and South Korea and before Philippines and USA (still negotiating between US TV production and Japanese Publishing House). They called their version as 'Meteor Shower'.

When asked why this title:

Yaojia stated that because this drama is on the surface a pure love story, and the relatively pure yet a bit sad terms Meteor and Shower can correctly express the drama's misty, dreamy air of the youthful liveness.

Is this the same with the Taiwan version?

The name 'New Meteor Garden' has been changed to 'Meteor Shower', the character names of "Shancai," ""Daoming Si" and "Huaze Lei," became "Chu Yuqian," "Yun Hai" and "Duanmu Lei." This caused a lot of debate between the netizens. The reporter then found the Meteor Shower's executive producer Ren Yaojia and asked about the reasons behind the changes. Yaojia replied that first, 'Meteor Shower' and 'New Meteor Garden' are not the same dramas. 'New Meteor Garden' is a drama from ten years ago. Many of its ideals and thoughts are no longer true now. Hunan Satellite TV's drama is almost all original, the only similarity are the basic settings of four boys and a girl. Hunan Satellite TV's 'Meteor Shower' wants to express the attitudes of modern college students toward love, life, career and change. Through a cute and light-hearted way, the drama will express the bright, enthusiastic attitudes of today's youth. Overall, it's very different from 'Meteor Garden', so everything from the title to the names of the characters have been changed.

For me, the actors don't have the appeal to be called as F4. Omg, they look like innocent children. I also don't like the school uniforms, what kind of fashion is that? It looks like wearing a Fiesta outfit, drummers and evrything. It is over decorated. Without watching the series for me it will be the WORST F4 EVER based on the appeals and dress. But we don't see yet their talents.

I like the lead actress, she looks pretty and nice and I also love the school, Aliceton University (Xia Men University in real life). It is so big I also love the classrooms it's so modern. They also have school buses, which I like. I don't know when is the playdate.

But here are the lead characters

* Zheng Shuang as Chu Yuyun
* Zhang Han as Murong Yunhai
* Yu Hao Ming as Duan Yu Lei
* Wei Chen as Ye Shuo
* Zhu Zi Xiao as Shangguan Ruiqian

Synopsis:

Chu Yuyun, the lead character of the series is a poor, hardworking, smart high-school girl. One of her biggest dream is to enter the most prestigious school in the country, Aliceton University where only the richest and the best students can study. With the help from her uncle, she finally gets in unbearingly that she might meet the group F4.

Yun Hai, Duan Mu Lei, Shangguan Ruiqian and Ye Shuo are the four richest students of Aliceton and known as the campus popular group F4. They became the idols of all the girls and even boys in the campus because of their attitude, power and looks. However, they are unsatisfied with their life as their parents puts so much pressure on them being the richest in China. In order for them to be kicked out from Aliceton University, they perform a series of pranks.

Yuyun fights for justice for the victims of the group and she become their instant target. Through fighting and arguing, they began to admire each other and became friends. Touched by Yuyun, F4 eventually becomes the top four students of the school. At the same time, they became loving, responsible males. Through the multiple struggles and hardships, Girl and F4 grew up. They learned to control their own lives, chose their own futures, and to strive for their dreams.
